Dear Parents,
The second graders are settling in beautifully to our busy second quarter! We'll have new fun and challenges in the coming weeks.
It's Getting Cold Outside! The children will go outside for recess even in colder weather. Please be sure they have hats, gloves, scarves, etc. so they can stay warm. It's easy for these items to get mixed up; please write your child's name in each item
Math and Money! We are beginning Chapter 3 on Money. Please give your child many opportunities to practice giving change using the least number of coins. This can be a challenging concept and practice really helps!
Each child should bring in $1 in small change. We'll use the coins to practice here at school as well. Please send the change with your child by Monday, November 17th.
Social Studies Travel Booklet! The details for this project can be found in our Social Studies Book on page 48. The children have been given the construction paper to use for the project. I'm looking forward to seeing their fine work! The booklets are due on Thursday, November 20th.
Reconciliation! Your child should be working on his or her Reconciliation Book at home with you. I hope you are both enjoying the preparation for this beautiful Sacrament of Mercy! The children should bring their books in to school on Monday, December 1st so we can talk about all they're learning.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Monday, November 17th: $1 in change due for money parctice
Thursday, November 20th: Social Studies Travel Booklet Due
Monday, November 24th: Spelling Lesson 11 Test (See words listed in the Calendar for November 12th)
Monday, December 1st: Return Reconcilation Books to School
Here are a few reminders as we continue our second quarter:
Please be sure your child's name is clearly written on all clothing and on all belongings -- it is the best way to be sure a misplaced item is returned to your child.
Reading aloud is an important skill for second grade! The children need a bit more practice at home in order to do this fluently. Please give your child lots of opportunities to read out loud to you.
Each day your child should be reading at home and practicing basic math facts. These should be considered daily homework assignments; the little bit of time spent practicing these important skills at home makes a big difference here at school!
Communication between home and school is vital to a productive school year. Please be sure to sign and return any reminder notes.
Our snack time is about making healthy food choices. Here are some ideas from the August 2008 edition of Chicago Parent magazine that would really help fuel our day: apple wedges or celery with peanut butter, almonds mixed with dried fruit, wheat crackers and cheese, fresh fruit or vegetables, breadsticks. Please no cookies, chips or candy for snack time.
Thank you for your support! Enjoy your week!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mraz
