NEWS FROM MS. SCHMITZ - PHYS ED TEACHER… Please e-mail me anytime at kss91354@hotmail.com. About Manners, Self-Control and Civility.... Most of our children know how to display good manners and self-control. I see so many acts of kindness among the children that it warms my heart and makes me thank God I'm a teacher! However, I sometimes see things that remind me that 'good manners' and 'civility' don't necessarily come natural to children, and therefore must be taught. Too often I will see a child yell in another child's face, push another child in anger, or step in front of another child at the drinking fountain. I believe I see more of this type of behavior than most teachers because P.E. class is more active and emotionally charged than most - especially during a game situation. I try to teach and model those things that make us civilized: empathy, good manners, self-control, kindness, respect, & Catholic values. I also try to reward kind acts, just by acknowledging them. I know you do to, parents. Let's never stop setting high standards for our childrens' behavior. Our children want and need boundaries and guidance. When we show them that we care enough to guide them and teach them to "do unto others", they know they are loved and cared for. It gives them a sense of security and shows them that there are things they can do, every day, to make the world a better place! Kids! Repeat after me..... "I will remember that our gym is a Catholic gym where Catholic values guide us. I will have a positive attitude when I enter the gym. I will participate, try my best, support and respect my classmates and teacher, and keep it light and fun! I will be thankful for our nice gym, my good health, and all the blessings that surround me in the gym, and everywhere I go!" Thanks Kids! **** PARENTS: Please click on "Parents", above, for special 'parent' info! WHO IS MS. "S" ANYWAY?.... I'm you're fun-loving, kid-friendly physical education teacher. I teach phys ed and everything that has to do with P.E. such as fitness; sports; games; tumbling and dance; health; safety; teamwork; and skills for getting along, managing stress, staying healthy your entire life, and living by our Catholic values in gym class. My top priority is keeping our children in one piece! Believe me, that's not easy! Seven times a day, a class of about 25 children come into the gym with their eyes popping out, their nerves jumpin' for joy, their legs twitching to just run, and their minds thinking about nothing but having wild and crazy fun with their friends! Kids are screaming joyously and happy chemicals are flooding little brains to a point where they can barely hear or think straight! 'Gym' is so very exciting!! - but can be hazardous as well! So I constantly remind our children to think about SAFETY, follow our safety rules, be respectful of others, and just use common sense. Please talk to your child about the importance of 'safety' in phys ed class. If they hear it from both you and me, it will sink in better! Here are the basic SAFETY RULES for P.E. class: LISTEN & FOLLOW DIRECTIONS BE KIND AND RESPECTFUL (to everyone and everything) DON'T CRASH (into walls or each other! - to achieve this, please keep heads up and eyes open!) KEEP IT FUN WALK AWAY FROM ANGER (not easy for some, but an important thing to learn and do!) ------------------------------------------------------------ HEY KIDS ! GET MORE EXERCISE !! Here's how you can get more exercise..... When you're old enough, become a St. George Dragon and play basketball or volleyball for your school, or be a cheerleader! Join a dance or gymnastics class. Walk your dog, or play outside with brothers/sisters and neighborhood kids! Check out the park district or local athletic associations.....they have many cool programs that will keep you active! Help with household chores (without being told)! That's good exercise! NOTE TO PARENTS: During the school year, if you need to speak to me about anything, please phone the school at 532-2626 to make an appointment. If you prefer, you can meet me at the front gate (south gate on 176th Street), any day between Mon. and Fri. at around 2:15pm where I will be directing traffic. You can also e-mail me at kss91354@hotmail.com. Also, for special 'parent' info (important stuff!), click on 'Parents' above. Junior high students do NOT learn about reproduction in health class, so it's up to you, Parents! If you click on "Parents" above, I will guide you to some web sites and resources that will help you! Here are some good FITNESS, HEALTH & SPORTS WEBSITES for children and parents to visit: www.kidshealth.org - everything kids need to know about health, fitness and safety.
