I hope the following info answers any questions you may have:

P.E. UNIFORMS: I recommend that on your 'gym' days, you wear your St. George P.E. shorts and t-shirts, when warm/hot out.  For cooler days, wear your sweat pants and t-shirt.  You can carry or wear your sweat shirt on days when you think you will need it.  I do not recommend wearing shorts under the sweat pants, although I think the handbook suggests this.  Always wear clean socks, comfortable gym shoes, hair tied back, no hanging jewelry.

USED UNIFORM CLOSET....

I am in charge of the used uniform closet, so if you need anything at all-- a skirt, black dress pants, jumper, green shirt, P.E. sweatshirt, or whatever, please let me know!  (we are always short on P.E. sweatpants and sweatshirts).  You can e-mail me with your child's name, grade and homeroom, piece(s) needed (please describe), size, & your phone number.  We don't have every piece in every size, but I'll always check to see if we have what you need and if so, I'll deliver it to your child.  If not, I'll let you know!  Please allow me a couple of days to fulfill orders!  Of course I make exchanges if you need a different size!  Thanks! -Ms. S, kss91354@hotmail.com

P.E. CLASS RULES:

Listen; Follow Directions; Be Kind and Respectful; Do Not Crash (into wall or each other!); Take Care of Equipment, Facility and Each Other

Some kids ask me: How do you know what to teach us?  Others ask: If I don't like to do that then WHY do I have to?  Maybe you will find the answers to these questions by looking at the curriculums I am required to follow.   One is from the State of Illinois Board of Education, and one is from the Archdiocese of Chicago, Education Office.  They are very similar, and both are EXCELLENT (in my opinion!).  You can click on the links below, or cut and paste them into your browser....

 ABOUT MANNERS, SELF-CONTROL, CIVILITY, SAFETY....

Most of our children know how to employ good manners and self-control. I see so many acts of kindness among the children that it warms my heart and makes me thank God I'm a teacher!  However, I sometimes see things that remind me that 'good manners' and 'civility' do not necessarily come natural to children, and therefore must be taught.  Occasionally, I will see a child yell in another child's face, push another child in anger, or step in front of another child at the drinking fountain.  (I don't think our kids are 'mean' - just impulsive and thoughtless sometimes- because of their age and immaturity).  I believe I see more of this type of behavior than most teachers because P.E. class is more active, interactive, and emotionally charged than most - especially during a game situation.  I try to teach and model those things that make us civilized: empathy, good manners, self-control, kindness, respect, & Catholic values.  I also try to reward kind acts, just by acknowledging them.  I know you do to, parents.  Let's never stop setting high standards for our childrens' behavior.  Our children want and need boundaries and guidance.  When we show them that we care enough to guide them and teach them to "do unto others", they know they are loved and cared for.  It gives them a sense of security and shows them that there are things they can do, every day, to make the world a better place!

 Kids!  Repeat after me.....

"I will remember that our gym is a Catholic gym where Catholic values guide us.  I will have a positive attitude when I enter the gym.  I will participate, try my best, support and respect my classmates and teacher, and keep it light and fun!  I will be thankful for our nice gym, my good health, and all the blessings that surround me in the gym, and everywhere I go!"

Thanks Kids!

 WHO IS MS. "S" ANYWAY?....

I'm you're fun-loving, kid-friendly physical education teacher. I teach phys ed and everything that has to do with P.E. such as fitness; sports; games; tumbling and dance; health; safety; teamwork; and skills for getting along, managing stress, staying healthy your entire life, and living by our Catholic values in gym class. (I am also a certified Catechist).

My top priority is keeping our children in one piece! Believe me, that's not easy! Seven times a day, a class of about 25 children come into the gym with their eyes popping out, their nerves jumpin' for joy, their legs twitching to just run, and their minds thinking about nothing but having wild and crazy fun with their friends! Kids are screaming joyously and happy chemicals are flooding little brains to a point where they can barely hear or think straight! 'Gym' is so very exciting!! - but can be hazardous as well! So I constantly remind our children to think about SAFETY, follow our safety rules, be respectful of others, and just use common sense. (Review Safety Rules: Listen, Follow Directions, Be kind and respectful, don't crash,  stay positive, walk away from anger).  Please talk to your child about the importance of 'safety' in phys ed class, and about taking care of self and others. If they hear it from both you and me, it will sink in better!

BTW....I recently won a national contest sponsored by P.E. Central website for submitting several original lesson plans that were deemed outstanding!  (I'm bragging a little here!)  The best part is...the prize.....$350 in gift certificates from S&S Worldwide, a supplier of P.E. equipment.  I bought some new balls, bean bags, and other things with the money.  Yay!

HEY KIDS ! GET MORE EXERCISE !!

Here's how you can get more exercise.....

Become a St. George Dragon and play soccer, basketball or volleyball for your school, or be a cheerleader (when in Jr. High)!

Join a dance or gymnastics class.

Walk your dog, or play outside with brothers/sisters and neighborhood kids!

Check out the park district or local athletic associations.....they have many cool programs that will keep you active!

Help with household chores (without being told)! That's good exercise!

NOTE TO PARENTS:

During the school year, if you need to speak to me about anything, please e-mail me at kss91354@hotmail.com, or phone the school at 532-2626 to make an appointment.  If you prefer, you can meet me  at the front gate (south gate on 176th Street), any day between Mon. and Fri. at around 2:15pm - after I am finished directing traffic out of the lot.

Also, for special 'parent' info (important stuff!), click on 'Parents' above.  Junior high students do NOT learn about 'puberty' and 'human reproduction' in health class, so it's up to you, Parents!  The kids get the wrong info from their friends, so you need to 'have the talk' early....5th or 6th grade perhaps!  If you click on "Parents" above, I will guide you to some web sites and resources that will help you!

MORE GREAT WEB SITES:

www.kidshealth.org - this is absolutely the best site!...and has everything kids need to know about health, fitness and safety. Please note: There are 3 sections: "Kid" section, "Teen" section, "Parent" section. If your child visits this site, he/she should be in the age-appropriate area.

www.sportskool.com - great training site for kids, parents and coaches. This site has online videos presented by professional athletes offering game tips, techniques, warm-up exercises and skill drills. 'Sport Skool' videos are also available on TV from Comcast On Demand. Select the Sports & Fitness series, then select 'Sportskool'.

www.PresidentsChallenge.org - a fitness program from the Prez (the U.S. Prez, that is!) that will enable children to earn a Presidential medal for fitness!

www.bam.gov - my second favorite site, and a favorite super-fun site for the kids, all about health and fitness - with lots of cool learning activities and games. This site is sponsored by the U.S. government. Check it out!
