Laughing We Are Thankful to be Reading!! Laughing

Our class is continuing in our latest reader, Let's Learn Together.  The children enjoy showing how much they can read; please continue to look for your student's book to come home each week, and give your first grader many opportunities to read the stories with you!  It makes a big difference here at school!

The children will not receive new vocabulary or spelling lists for the shortened holiday week, but they are welcome to review past lists or look ahead on our calendar to our next list.  The vocabulary words are pulled directly from the stories we'll read during the week - practicing them often helps make them easy to spot in the stories, helping your child enjoy great success as a reader!  Also, as you go about your day, encourage your first grader to find short "u" words with his or her ears and eyes!  And keep a look out for those short "a," "i," "e" and "o" words, too!

The children are also working very hard on mastering their basic addition and subtraction facts.  This is a vital skill; please encourage your child to practice their facts often -- offer a few on the way to and from school for quick and easy review!

I hope you'll take a moment and explore our website!   Please check back here often for news and information from our class.  It is proving to be a great year!

NJHS Thanksgiving Food Drive

The National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring a collection of canned goods and other non-perishables for the Tinley Park Food Pantry.  Please send your donation with your child.  Together we can help feed the hungry!!

Honoring Our Service Men and Women!

Student Council is creating a unique display in honor of Veteran's Day.  If you have a family member or friend who is currently serving in the armed forces, please let us include him or her!  Send in a picture to be included in the display, along with the person's name and branch of service.  We will be including all our brave service personnel in our prayers!

Calling All Pull Tabs!

Our class has already gathered one full gallon jug worth of pull tabs!  Let's keep them coming -- together we make a great difference!

Doing Our PART!

Heading out to dinner, planning on taking in a movie or filling up the gas tank?  Please remember to use PART to benefit you and our school!  Thank you!

Click on the "Parents" tab and scroll down for links to websites which are tied to the textbooks we are using this year.  These links provide great information, practice, review and fun for you and your first grader.

HOMEWORK NOTE

Homework will be sent home each evening in your child's take-home folder.  It will be stamped "Homework," and should be completed and returned the next school day.  These daily assignments will not be listed here.

Also, each week the children will each receive a new list of reading and spelling words.  These words should be practiced daily as homework, since mastery of them is a crucial part of their growth as readers.  For your convenience, the lists will also be included here on our website.  Past and near future lists are shown in the calendar to the left.  Simply click on the Monday of any week for that week's word lists.  The most current list is shown below:
