Cool We Are Superstar Readers! Cool

This week the first graders will continue in their latest hardcover book, Take Me There. What progress the children are making!  The students are enjoying their big books as well as the little books they bring home each week and they are delighted to read them to you!  Now that we've tackled both long and short vowels the challenge is learning to recognize both as we read.  Our words lists are getting more challenging, too, so a bit of extra time practicing would be a great idea!

It is clear that the children are practicing their Spelling words!  Our next test will be Friday, March 12th.  Remember, our 10-word spelling lists include 6 words with something in common (like the long "i" words using "igh" and ending "ie" this week), 2 words from our reading list ("been" and "found" on our list) and two additional words we'll see often (possessives "dog's" and "cat's" on this list.)  Please give your student lots of practice spelling the words both out loud to you and by writing them down.

In math we're enjoying First Grade geometry!  We'll look at shapes and positional words.  During this chapter, too, we'll continue basic facts practice here at school and hope you'll do the same at home.  The more practice the better!  Mastery of their basic facts is a skill that will help the children tremendously as they progress through their school years.  A few facts on the way to and from school can make a big difference.

We are also continuing our efforts to build good "first grade" habits, such as sitting up straight, holding pencils correctly, listening to and following directions, being patient, polite and taking good care of our things. These are skills and habits we'll reinforce throughout the year since they really help the whole class to learn!

I hope you'll take a moment and explore our website!   Please check back here often for news and information from our class.  It is proving to be a great year!

Peace, Joy, Goodness, Patience, Love, Kindness and SELF-CONTROL Be With Our School

Throughout the year our whole school will be enjoying a special celebration of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit!  Each month we'll talk about a different "Fruit!"  So far we've learned about PEACE, JOY, GOODNESS, PATIENCE, LOVE and KINDNESS.  The children have done a beautiful job on our in-class projects (be sure to click on "Album" above to see pictures of our Joy Ride.)  When you visit the school you'll see signs of celebration -- from the big bulletin board at the center of the school, to classroom projects up in the halls to posters hanging throughout the building!

This month the celebration continues with KINDNESS!  We hope you'll join in the fun and bring the celebration home with your own discussion on these most welcome GIFTS!

                                                 Calling All Pull Tabs!

Our class is gathering pull tabs! We've already filled TWO gallon jugs and we're still going strong!  Thank you to all who have contributed already - keep them coming!  Together we make a real difference!

Doing Our PART!

Heading out to dinner, planning on taking in a movie or filling up the gas tank?  Please remember to use PART to benefit you and our school!  Thank you!

HOMEWORK NOTE

Homework will be sent home each evening in your child's take-home folder.  It will be stamped "Homework," and should be completed and returned the next school day.  These daily assignments will not be listed here.

Also, each week the children will each receive a new list of reading and spelling words.  These words should be practiced daily as homework, since mastery of them is a crucial part of their growth as readers.  For your convenience, the lists will also be included here on our website.  Past and near future lists are shown in the calendar to the left.  Simply click on the Monday of any week for that week's word lists.  The most current list is shown below:
